Nice surprise today with blog hits.

kyleabaker-com-blog-stats-2008-12-10

As always, at the end of the day I check my blog stats to see where my traffic is coming from and what content is catching the most attention. I was certainly surprised today to see that I got a new all time hit count in blog hits.

kyleabaker com blog stats 2008 12 10 Nice surprise today with blog hits.

For some reason WordPress stats stop counting here at 8:00 pm EST. I guess it’s some setting in my WordPress account or something and I just haven’t gotten around to looking into it yet. Ah well.

Just one of those random spikes in traffic I suppose, but I’ll take it. icon razz Nice surprise today with blog hits.

Looks like tomorrow could be the same with 12 hits in 15 minutes (at time of taking screenshot of course). Hopefully I’m gaining some credibility on the web. Who knows.

WP-UserAgent 0.5.3.3 Released

I’ve just uploaded an update to my WP-UserAgent plugin that improves a great deal on the settings page in the administration panel.

This update also has several backward compatibility fixes. Just looking forward and trying to make sure everything works fine in other versions of WordPress since not everyone uses the latest version.

You can find a list of changes to version 0.5.3.3 and the download on the same page.

I’ve also updated the download page to reflect the browsers and operating systems that are currently detected.

If you know of one that is missing and would like to see it added then feel free to let me know in the comments on the download page. If you can post a user agent string sample as well then that would be great, but if not then it’s not necessary.

If you are using a browser and/or operating system that is not listed then please just post a comment letting me know what browser and/or operating system you are using. I should be able to do the rest. Thanks!

WordPress 2.7 to be released tomorrow!

wordpress-logo2

wordpress logo2 150x150 WordPress 2.7 to be released tomorrow!WordPress 2.7 is to be released tomorrow and the changes look pretty impressive! The majority of the changes that you will visually notice are in the administration panel and your readers will most likely not notice any significant changes. Navigating through the administration panel should be a lot more efficient and hopefully there will be a performance boost! I’ll post more details and changes tomorrow when I’ve upgraded, but one cool new feature is an integrated upgrade tool. icon wink WordPress 2.7 to be released tomorrow!

EDIT:
Apparently the update report that I read was confused and the update release is not scheduled for today. I’ll post again when I have more details. icon wink WordPress 2.7 to be released tomorrow!

A new version of WordpPress just surprised me. Usually I’m in the know about these kinds of updates, but this one was a nice surprise.

If you’re not using it already then I would suggest WordPress Automatic Upgrade, which is a free plugin for WordPress that upgrades everything for you without all of the hassel.

Live easily and use this plugin. Just trust me. icon wink Upgrading to WordPress 2.6.5

WP-UserAgent: A new User Agent plugin for WordPress, by me!

I’ve posted a modified WordPress plugin that you can download, extract and upload to your WordPress plugins folder to use.

I call it WP-UserAgent…a much more generic name than before. I prefer generic names. icon wink WP UserAgent: A new User Agent plugin for WordPress, by me!

After activating it, it will show the operating system and browser of each user and comment for all of your posts and pages.

Enjoy and feel free to suggest improvements!

Upgraded to WordPress 2.6.3, new daily hits record

kyleabaker-750-hits

Sorry for the 1-2 minute down time just now while I was upgrading to WordPress 2.6.3. icon razz Upgraded to WordPress 2.6.3, new daily hits record

I know you missed being able to access the site for that amount of time, but it’s back now. icon biggrin Upgraded to WordPress 2.6.3, new daily hits record

In other news, kyleabaker.com saw a burst of activity today due to the interest in my post “Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 RC” and many Linux fans or curious people searching for Ubuntu 8.10 RC news.

I ended the 24 hour period with a total of 831 hits, beating out the previous daily record of 519 that came about after posting to a Digg article regarding Opera 9.5.

I tweeted the 750 hits mark here. The cycle resets at 8:00 PM so the results from today look like the following:

kyleabaker 750 hits 300x120 Upgraded to WordPress 2.6.3, new daily hits record

kyleabaker 750 hits 02 300x120 Upgraded to WordPress 2.6.3, new daily hits record

kyleabaker 831 hits 300x120 Upgraded to WordPress 2.6.3, new daily hits record

That last one give the final count and a preview to the searches that brought up kyleabaker.com most often. I’m glad to see so much interest in Ubuntu these days!

Drupal < WordPress

druplicon

druplicon Drupal < WordPressAfter a lot of work..and research..and back and forth communication with an ITEC member here at NC State, I was finally able to get Drupal installed and running on the EOS web server.

Unfortunately they have disabled many very useful features in the Apache server settings in order to eliminate potential security hazards.

As it turned out, all that I needed to do the whole time to get Drupal working (other than some permission modifications, creating new folders since Open Base Directory usage was restricted and a few others) was to temporarily rename or remove the .htaccess file.

After that the setup completed, the .htaccess file was restored and everything seems to be fine.

Now that Drupal is running I’ve had time to inspect the control panel and I really must say that Drupal is far from user friendly when compared to WordPress.

It was actually a little frustrating to navigate through and content posting tools were in my opinion less than useful. I expected to find a nice text editor similar to the one found in WordPress for posts or pages (TinyMCE), but as it turns out there is only a text area (resizable, woot).

Anyhoo, I now get to finish migrating content from the ACM/AITP web site into Drupal so it can be managed more efficiently and kept up-to-date.

Drupal offers a lot of modules which are basically like plug-ins and add new functionality and features to your site such as a calendar or whatever you need.

I haven’t really started working on the theme yet and probably won’t until I get all of the content migrated and general usability of the site complete, but I really hope that the themes are as simple to modify for Drupal as they are for WordPress.

I’ll post some pictures when I complete the site update…or something geeky. icon razz Drupal < WordPress

WordPress 2.6.2 Released

WordPress 2.6.2 was just released. It’s a stability and security update mainly, so if you feel the urge to update (as I did) then you should go for it.

This release is in response to a recent warning to developers from Stefan Esser about the dangers of SQL Column Truncation and weaknesses of mt_rand(). The issue at hand that forced the release is discussed in detail on the WordPress.org blog post linked above. Basically the attack is complex, is dependent on open registration being turned on in your blog, but can be executed in theory and turns out to be more of an annoyance than an actual exploit.

If you have open registration on your blog, the WordPress.org team recommends that you upgrade your install to WordPress 2.6.2 A handful of other fixes are also included in this upgrade. Here is a list of changed files.

You may notice the site disabled temperarily, but it should only be for a minute or two. Wish me luck….pizza just arrived…

[solved] Stop WordPress Spam Registrations

wordpress-logo2

wordpress logo2 150x150 [solved] Stop WordPress Spam RegistrationsI’ll bet all of you out there have dealt with your fair share of spam. Everyone gets it, in their email, blog posts and lately even WordPress registrations! I have a tool for handling spam comments on my blog, but what do I do when I get 10′s to 100′s of spam user registrations on my blog with names and emails like BuyCheapMeds and FreeSoftwareDVDs@some-russian-website.ru?

Well, thank goodness the WordPress Extend site has so much to offer! After asking in the WordPress forums how to completely disable new user registrations…and getting little response…I decided that I would have to edit some of the WordPress files to ignore new user registrations in a fashion to fit my needs. I wanted to keep them open from the admin panel so I myself can add new users, but block outsiders from registering so I could control the spam registrations.

To my surprise I got a response in the forum thread that I started with an example plugin that could be used. I looked into the example plugin, but I found myself confused at the description and uncertain of how the plugin actually worked. Who wants to install something on their site when they have no clue how it works!

I dug a bit deeper and searched this time for only 5-10 minutes and came across two plugins that were capable of handling my needs and one that was just plain cool.

To control your spam registrations I would suggest the following three plugins which are ordered according to the order that I would choose them.

  1. Register Plus
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/register-plus/
  2. Sabre
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sabre/
  3. Referrer Bouncer
    http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/word-press-1-5-plugin-referer-bouncer/

If you’re wondering why I sorted them this way then I’ll try to explain quickly.

Referrer Bouncer was the one that was suggested to me in the forum thread, but I found that it was a bit more involved than the others and it required the user to create a file called “referer.txt” and add domains that should be blocked (at least I think it was for blocked domains…not a clear description or how to icon sad [solved] Stop WordPress Spam Registrations ) and it just made more sense to go with a different plugin rather than tracking down all of the referring sites that I needed to block.

Sabre does exactly what I wanted to do. It was like it knew what I wanted before I asked, haha, but I decided to go with Register Plus in the end because it allows me to create invitation codes so that I can easily leave the registration open to the public, but they will need to contact me and request an invitation.

Why did I chose this method? I figured that most people would prefer not to register in the first place. Nothing at kyleabaker.com is restricted to the general public that is open to the registered users…it’s all the same. So if you wanted to post then you can freely post comments here. The invitations are for friends and people that I know so they can register if they wish and I know they won’t be spamming me. icon smile [solved] Stop WordPress Spam Registrations Except maybe Dan…he’s done it before. icon razz [solved] Stop WordPress Spam Registrations

The third plugin that I found (the Referrer Bouncer was found by someone else and posted in the WordPress forums for me) was one that allows users to login via OpenID! This is really cool because it doesn’t require a user to actually register at your site and waste space! They can register at any website that offers OpenID such as Yahoo, WordPress, Flickr (also Yahoo) and many more!

I didn’t go with WP-OpenID because spammers can still register via OpenID and login on your site. They wouldn’t be spamming the registrations, that’s one plus side, but they are still encouraged to test out my comment filtering system..and they always jump at chances to piss people off like that. icon razz [solved] Stop WordPress Spam Registrations

So I suggest you look into my “research” if you’re having similar trouble! Enjoy!
